GLOBAL STRIKE FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE.

Our forefathers fought, for one thing, independence, and they did it well. Today, our fight is not just for independence, the fight of this generation is on Climate Change.

This is why from Friday, 20-27 of September 2019, millions of people, including school children, youth, parents, labor and humanitarian groups, environmental organizations and employees of some of the world’s biggest brands also set to participate in the strike to demand transformative action on the climate crisis.

According to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres,
‘’The Youth has been showing an enormous Leadership, and I hope that their leadership will have a very strong impact on the societies as a whole  as a whole, on their families and based on that, on the  governments of their Counties’’.

The global climate strike is the third in a worldwide series of climate rallies organized to by students and led by 16-year-old Greta Thunberg.

WHO IS DOING WHAT FOR GLOBAL CLIMATE STRIKE ACROSS THE WORLD

From London to New York City and Paris, climate activists will take part in a global general strike. Thousands of people across Australia are protesting for world leaders gathering for a UN Climate Action Summit to stop an environmental catastrophe, and more locally, for government and businesses to commit to a target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Over 1,500 Amazon employees have pledged to walk out and Microsoft workers have also said they will join the strikes.

The General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, Sharan Burrow, said 200 million members in countries from  South Africa to Germany, Mozambique to Turkey would stand shoulder to shoulder with students.

www.schoolstrike4climate.com, www.fridaysforfuture.org, ukscn.org and many others are all websites that are mobilizing people for the biggest Climate Strike.

LOCALIZING THE GLOBAL CLIMATE STRIKE

Just like in the other parts of the World, thousands of Ghanaian youths have marched to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to present a petition to Accra Mayor, Mohammed Adjei Sowah. The petition charges the government to keep its fossil-free fuel commitment by 2030.

A youth group in Ghana called the Youth in Natural Resource and Environmental Governance (Y-NREG) is organizing a social media campaign from 20-27th of September. According to the coordinator of the group, Chibeze Ezekiel,

”Our Digital Campaign Team has developed different infographics with key messages concerning the environment, climate change, women, youth, children which will be shared on the various Social Media Platforms. We will tag the president, The Vice President, The Environmental Protection Agency and other key stakeholders in our posts, for them to see our messages and make Climate-Smart Decisions.”

And on Friday,  the 27th of September, which is the last day of the Global Strike, the champions of climate change and its related Issues in Ghana, 350 Ghana Reducing our Carbon, will organize a climate Funfair for School in Obuasi.

Just as we celebrate our forefathers for their courage in fighting for Independence, I hope posterity will also Clelbrate this generation One Day for fighting to Sustaining our environment a securing their future. Let’s strive to save our planet, CLIMATE ACTION NOW!!!
